Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Vitamin K2-MK4

Metabolic Syndrome is a collection of disorders that results in many symptoms impacting health.  People with metabolic disorder are at greater risk for Diabetes, Heart Attack, and Stroke.  Metabolic Syndrome is not really a disease, but it is rather a collection of symptoms.  These symptoms are relatively common in adults (about 1 in 6), and include:

  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Blood Sugar
  • High Cholesterol
  • Abdominal Fat

All of these are signs that your body is not regulating its core systems properly.  All these symptoms lead to higher risk of heart attack and stroke.  While the condition is known to be accelerated by lifestyle choices, it has historically been thought as also degenerative and age related.  Because the risk of developing these symptoms increases with age, most people will one day become diabetic, or develop metabolic syndrome.  This is especially true if a person lives long enough, and continues to eat predominately from the commercial food supply.

Vitamin K2-MK4 and magnesium are both critical for proper blood sugar control and glucose metabolism in general.  Vitamin K2-MK4 is specifically needed for the activation of hormones and enzymes used to regulate and control blood sugar and insulin.  If the body is deficient of either of these, then cells are not able to properly use insulin, or uptake glucose.

Higher than normal blood glucose levels which progressively develops over time, also called Type II Diabetes, is often at the core of metabolic syndrome.   This is the name for a central set of hormonal, metabolic, and regulatory disorders of glucose and insulin metabolism.  Over time, the failure of the body to actively regulate these processes leads to the health problems.

In this discussion we will focus primarily on type II, or “adult onset”, Diabetes.  Type I Diabetes is generally developed during childhood and is thought to have an auto-immune origin.  While Type II and Type I Diabetes have many things in common from a dietary perspective, these are two separate conditions and behave differently.  Whereas Type II can be reversed, Type I cannot.

Type II Diabetes begins to manifest in today’s youth as early as 14 years old.  Frequent meals consisting of fast food, sodas and highly processed seed based food, such as bread, pasta, beans, nuts, sweets, unsaturated oils and more, lead to a host of metabolic issues for today’s children.  This is also true for the adult population.  Recent data shows that diabetes, and associated obesity, is one of the fastest growing diseases in the modern world.

If the body is also forced to digest large loads of glucose yielding foods devoid of nutrients (carbohydrate laden foods) for long enough, it begins to create a series of interdependent and declining health issues, such as discussed above.  These issues will generally continue to worsen over time if corrective action is not taken.

Because the regulation and distribution of insulin and glucose are so central to the body, chronic problems cause wide ranging symptoms linking many age related diseases.  If the regulation of these complex interwoven systems are continually disturbed by frequent blood sugar spikes, then health will eventually begin to decline due to nutrients being perpetually consumed at elevated rates during the bodies continuing involuntary repair and maintenance response.  This process eventually slows and weakens the immune system and compromises the bodies ability to repair itself over time.

Early warning symptoms of metabolic syndrome may include:

  • Dry/flaky/patchy/itchy skin
  • Rashes/psoriasis/dandruff
  • Waking at night to urinate
  • Rosacea or spider veins
  • Tooth or gum disease
  • Excessive underarm sweating
  • Small peeling wounds around nail cuticles
  • frequent colds or flu
  • chronic sinus infections

Because cells in various tissues must cooperate with one another, they need to sense each others chemical signals.  Vitamin K2-MK4 and magnesium are both critical to these communication processes at several key pathways.  If cellular communication and signaling become inefficient due to lack of nutrients, then the regulation of blood sugar, along with the rest of the endocrine system, also becomes less efficient as a direct result.

As a spiraling feedback, when efficiency drops, nutrients are not then  used as effectively as they were before.  This makes a bad situation worse by causing nutrient demand to go up even further.  If nutrient demand chronically outstrips supply because of ongoing cellular damage processes then hormone producing biochemical machinery must be partially shut down due to the lack of resources.  Since the production rates of these critical biochemical compounds needed by the immune system are now being nutrient limited, but simultaneously needed at higher rates to regulate the worsening endocrine system, an eventual breakdown of health is necessarily a direct result.

Finally, since K2-MK4 and magnesium are both needed to keep the organs and soft tissues free from calcium deposits, their deficiency also causes increased rates of hardening of the arteries.  Endocrine organs are especially susceptible to calcification.  When the endocrine organs calcify and harden, they do not work as well.  This then makes all the conditions above even worse.

Because of the all that is described, diabetics who are deficient of the fat soluble vitamins, especially including K2-MK4 and magnesium, may not experience profound improvements in their symptoms over time.  This may be true even for a person that strictly follows a diabetic diet and fitness program as recommended by medical practitioners.  In fact, it is possible that the root cause driving the diabetes will spread to other areas also dependent on the body’s repair systems.

In short, the biochemical mechanisms that produce and regulate the chemicals needed to affect blood sugar and control proper glucose metabolism throughout the body are highly dependent on vitamins K2-MK4, A and D, as well as the mineral magnesium.  Without ample stores of these nutrients, the body cannot control its sugar metabolism effectively and health directly suffers.

Genesis BioHealth’s product line is targeted to help you recover from the ravages of long term fat soluble nutrient deprivation, which is now recognized to be common and present in more than 80% of the western population.  We hope you choose to allow us to help you reach your health goals.
